Journey Into Imagination: Dreamfinder, Figment and Three Ride Versions

Journey Into Imagination has two opening dates that are easy to confuse. EPCOT’s pavilion opened on October 1, 1982, but its original dark ride began welcoming guests on March 5, 1983. Kodak sponsored the pavilion from 1982 until 2010. The ride’s later replacements remained inside the larger Imagination complex, so neither a change of show nor the end of sponsorship should be mistaken for the pavilion’s permanent closure. The original partnership

Dreamfinder and Figment gave an abstract subject a pair of personalities. Dreamfinder was an enthusiastic inventor and guide; Figment was his curious purple dragon companion. Their airship gathered the raw ingredients of ideas, turning imagination into something that could be collected, combined and explored. In the original attraction, the adult mentor and the questioning childlike character invited visitors to participate in the same spirit of discovery.

Disney historian Stacia Martin’s anniversary account illustrates the pair with 1981 concept-art and 1982 souvenir postcards. Those objects are valuable records of how the characters were introduced before the ride’s March debut. Image Works was part of the experience

The pavilion also let guests experiment for themselves. Original Image Works opened with EPCOT in October 1982, before the ride. Disney’s description identifies the Rainbow Corridor and Stepping Tones: an environment of colored light and a floor-based activity in which movement produced musical notes. These were hands-on exhibits, not rooms on the dark-ride route.

Image Works closed in October 1998 and returned on October 1, 1999, as ImageWorks–The Kodak “What If?” Labs. Its own chronology matters because a visitor could remember the pavilion’s glass pyramids, fountains, film theater and interactive activities as readily as the ride. The 1999 and 2002 versions

On October 1, 1999, the pavilion became Imagination! and the rewritten ride opened as Journey Into Your Imagination. Another revision followed on June 1, 2002, producing Journey Into Imagination with Figment. These are documented operating versions, not merely differences in punctuation or marketing. The present attraction uses the Imagination Institute and Dr. Nigel Channing, played by Eric Idle. His organized sensory demonstrations are disrupted by Figment, who turns the visit into an unruly exploration of possibility. Disney’s current page identifies sensory laboratories, the Smell Lab and an upside-down house among the scenes. The relationship is now between a controlled demonstration and the dragon’s disruptions, rather than the original guide-and-companion voyage. Current attraction description

A character beyond one ride

Figment’s history also extends into educational films, souvenirs and comics. Martin documents a Disney Kingdoms comic series beginning in June 2014, followed by another in 2015. Such appearances show why the character’s life cannot be reduced to whether one original scene survived. They also should not be treated as evidence that the old attraction itself returned. What is announced, and what is operating

As checked on September 8, 2026, Disney lists Journey Into Imagination With Figment as operating. Separately, an August 16, 2026 announcement promises a new journey bringing Dreamfinder and Figment together. That announcement provides no opening date, closure schedule or complete scene list.
