Soarin’ at EPCOT: California, the World and Across America

Soarin’ at EPCOT opened in The Land on May 5, 2005. It brought the California aerial-film experience to Florida four years after Soarin’ Over California debuted at Disney California Adventure on February 8, 2001. Those are separate attraction openings: a Florida guest’s first flight did not mark the invention of the show, and the California opening date should not be used for EPCOT. Disney A to Z

The attraction’s history is best understood as a continuing ride installation with changing films. Its original California itinerary, global journey, temporary California return and Across America presentation are related versions, not four unrelated EPCOT rides.

A film that lifts its audience

Disney’s history credits ride engineer Mark Sumner with developing a working model from an Erector set while solving the attraction’s flight-system problem. The finished experience combined the elevated audience with a large projection dome and a California film accompanied by Jerry Goldsmith’s music.

That pairing explains why the film matters so much to the attraction’s identity. The audience does not simply watch travel footage from an ordinary cinema seat: the lift, projected landscape and accompanying effects work together to suggest flight. Changing the itinerary can substantially alter a remembered experience without changing its basic purpose.

Around the World and the 2016 expansion

The Around the World presentation debuted on June 17, 2016. Disney’s contemporary expansion announcement also identified a third EPCOT theater, new digital screens and projection systems. The film change and added capacity belong in the same period of development, but they are different kinds of change: one affects what guests see, while the other affects how the attraction accommodates them. The global itinerary included the Matterhorn, Sydney Harbour, Egypt’s pyramids and the Eiffel Tower. Bruce Broughton adapted Goldsmith’s original musical material for that version. California returns for Disney100

The chronology is not a simple one-way replacement. Soarin’ Over California returned to EPCOT on September 22, 2023, for the Disney100 celebration. A firsthand report photographed the temporary signage, described California city graphics in the preshow and documented the California itinerary back in operation. Around the World returned on February 28, 2024, as documented by a contemporary report of the attraction’s updated signs. This means that an early-2024 recollection of flying over California at EPCOT is not necessarily a misremembered trip to Disneyland. February 2024 return report

Across America in 2026

Disney announced May 26, 2026, as the Florida start date for Soarin’ Across America, distinct from the July 2 date announced for California. Its new U.S. itinerary included New England coastline, New York Harbor and Grand Canyon West. As of this article’s September 2026 check, Disney lists Across America as an operating, limited-time presentation. The Around the World page specifically says that version is unavailable and directs guests to Across America. The current listing does not establish a final date for the American film. For an archive, the most useful labels are therefore the park, visit date and film version. Together they preserve what a guest actually experienced while allowing the ongoing attraction to keep its own history.
