Animal Kingdom Lodge, Jambo House and Kidani Village: A Phased History

Animal Kingdom Lodge did not open in its present two-building form. Its history has three essential milestones: the original hotel in 2001, Vacation Club accommodation within that building in 2007, and the first guest rooms at Kidani Village in 2009. Keeping them separate makes the resort’s changing names and development figures much easier to understand. Disney’s historical lodge entry and Kidani Village entry establish that sequence.

Animal Kingdom Lodge

The original Animal Kingdom Lodge opened on April 16, 2001, near Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Disney’s historical reference describes a 1,307-room hotel with three savannas and the restaurants Jiko, Boma and The Mara. Those are descriptions of the original hotel, not a room count or complete restaurant inventory for the enlarged resort today. D23: Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Architect Peter H. Dominick Jr.’s involvement places the lodge within a broader chapter of Disney hotel design. Architectural Record identifies Animal Kingdom Lodge, Wilderness Lodge and the Grand Californian among his Disney projects, drawing on safari camps, national-park lodges and Arts and Crafts traditions. The connection is architectural, not a claim that the three hotels share an identical cultural setting. Animal Kingdom Villas and Jambo House

Disney Vacation Club announced the Animal Kingdom Villas project on October 11, 2006. The announcement, preserved by DVCinfo, described two distinct undertakings: conversion of accommodation on the existing lodge’s fifth and sixth floors, and construction of a new village. Its figures—134 converted accommodations and 324 new vacation homes—were development plans, with openings then anticipated from fall 2007 through spring 2009. The first DVC accommodation in the original building, identified as Jambo House in Disney’s reference, opened on July 2, 2007. That is an opening milestone, not proof that every conversion was complete that day. A later opening-era release described Jambo House as containing 109 two-bedroom-equivalent accommodations. The unit of measurement matters: translating that phrase into “109 hotel rooms” loses a qualification in the historical record. D23’s opening date and May 2009 release preserved by HotelExecutive.

Finishing the Jambo conversion

The completion of that conversion should not be confused with its first guest opening. In September 2007, DVCNews reported that Disney’s FAQ had moved the completion target to January 29, 2008. AllEars’ surviving planning-era fact sheet subsequently described Jambo’s rooms as completed by that date. These are attributed secondary accounts, not a construction certificate or a directly inspected Disney completion announcement. February 18, 2008 is not treated here as a verified completion day. The inspected evidence supports distinguishing the 2007 opening from the later finishing work, while leaving the precise completion announcement unresolved. Neither date changes the meaning of the later release’s two-bedroom-equivalent inventory.

Kidani Village

Kidani Village’s first rooms opened on May 1, 2009. The May release called it the second phase of Animal Kingdom Villas, while describing more Kidani rooms as scheduled for fall. It projected 340 two-bedroom-equivalent villas at Kidani on completion. Thus “phase two” of the overall villas project could itself open in phases; the opening of Kidani was not a single event in which its entire planned inventory became available. Disney explains the name through a necklace metaphor: villas act as beads, connecting corridors as knots and the lobby as the central ornament. Where Kidani sits

Kidani is a separate building to the west of the original lodge, not a renamed wing within Jambo House. Disney’s campus travel map shows the two distinct footprints around the shared savanna and the outdoor route between their entrances. These are orientation aids, not a surveyed property boundary or a guarantee of a particular room view. Savannas, dining and recreation

Disney Files’ summer 2009 issue describes an expanded Sunset Savanna and a new Pembe Savanna. The magazine describes views of Pembe from an additional lodging phase that was still scheduled for later that year; it does not establish a separate savanna-opening day. The same feature discusses coordination with the animal-care team during construction—an important part of an expansion involving living animals, rather than decorative scenery alone. Sanaa opened May 1, 2009, with African cooking and Indian influences, and windows overlooking Sunset Savanna. D23: Sanaa. A continuing resort

Animal Kingdom Lodge remains an operating resort, not a lost hotel. Disney’s current listing describes four savannas, both hotel and villa accommodation, Uzima Pool and the Kidani recreation area.
