Carousel of Progress at Walt Disney World: A Changing Family

Carousel of Progress opened at Magic Kingdom on January 15, 1975, but its story did not begin in Florida. The attraction had appeared at the 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair and then at Disneyland, where it opened on July 2, 1967, and closed on September 9, 1973. As of September 2026, Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress is temporarily unavailable. Disney’s current notice dates that closure to July 6, 2026, and says the next version is expected in late spring 2027. A theater that moves the audience

The defining mechanism is the revolving audience area. Instead of walking between exhibits, guests move with their seating around a stationary central stage. The format allows the family’s home to change from one era to another while the audience remains seated.

In the preceding Florida presentation, household technology supplied the historical markers: gas lamps and a hand-cranked washing machine, then electrical conveniences, radio, dishwashing and television, and eventually voice-controlled appliances. These were staged versions of domestic life, not a claim that every American household acquired the same invention at the same moment. Their dramatic purpose was to make technological change visible through familiar activities.

The Florida music and sponsorship

When the attraction moved to Magic Kingdom, its musical identity changed. “The Best Time of Your Life” replaced the earlier theme, “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow.” General Electric remained the sponsor until 1985. The original theme later returned, making the music itself part of the attraction’s changing history.

The official references differ on the exact update year: Disney A to Z places the restoration in 1993, while the current attraction page and Disney’s newer retrospective describe a 1994 reworking. It is safest to identify this as the early-1990s revision rather than imply that the sources agree on one date. Separately, Disney A to Z records the name Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress in 1994.

For an old recording, the theme song is therefore a useful clue to the presentation being documented. It should be considered alongside the recording date, location and dialogue, not treated as proof that an entire show remained unchanged.

Walt’s connection and the announced introduction

Disney announced on August 30, 2025, that a new introductory scene would feature Walt Disney through Audio-Animatronics technology. The announcement described that scene as something guests would see before following the family through the main show. It did not report that the new figure was already performing. This planned addition highlights a real connection to Walt’s work without making the Florida attraction an untouched original. Its earlier roots included Edison Square, an unbuilt Disneyland expansion with a proposed household-technology drama. The World’s Fair show developed from that line of thinking. The unbuilt square was not a lost neighborhood of Magic Kingdom.

What Disney has announced for 2027

In an August 15, 2026, update, Imagineer Chris Beatty described a substantially revised presentation. Disney announced Jamie Lee Curtis and Bryan Cranston for the mother and father’s voices, and new scenes looking at 1969, Halloween 1985, New Year’s Eve 1999 and a possible future. The Walt introduction is inspired by the 1964 television special about Disney’s World’s Fair projects. Disney’s announced finale imagines a future household rather than documenting an era that has already occurred.

These are announced creative plans, with a late-spring 2027 target rather than a verified opening day. The historical record should retain the earlier Florida versions while adding the next presentation only as it is established. Carousel of Progress is especially well served by that approach: change is its subject, and change is also its own history.
