Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island: Magic Kingdom's Lost Waterfront

Magic Kingdom’s Rivers of America linked Liberty Square and Frontierland through a shared landscape of water, wooded islands and passing boats. Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat welcomed their final guests on July 6, 2025, with permanent closure beginning July 7. Those dates ended public experiences with different origins: the first riverboat entered service in 1971, while the island attraction and a second steamboat followed in 1973. The first riverboat: Admiral Joe Fowler

The Admiral Joe Fowler riverboat began operating on October 2, 1971, one day after Magic Kingdom opened. It was named for the retired admiral associated with construction of Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Disney records its retirement in fall 1980 and identifies the Richard F. The retirement date should not be embellished into a detailed destruction story without appropriate evidence. The inspected Disney reference does not specify a crane accident, a precise scrapping date or the ultimate destination of every component.

Most importantly, Admiral Joe Fowler did not become Liberty Belle. That later name belongs to the other riverboat.

Richard F. Irvine became Liberty Belle

The Richard F. Irvine entered service on May 20, 1973. Its name honored an early Disney designer and WED Enterprises executive. Disney describes it as a genuine steamboat, using steam to turn its large paddlewheel. Following a refurbishment in 1996, it was renamed Liberty Belle. Richard F. These are two names for one vessel, not two successive replacement boats. The rename explains why photographs taken decades apart can show a familiar riverboat carrying different lettering.

The shared waterfront attraction outlasted its first vessel by decades. An attraction timeline and a vessel timeline are therefore not interchangeable.

Tom Sawyer Island was an exploration, not a fixed ride

A detailed photographic tour published immediately after closure documents two connected islands. The main island contained mills, caves and other exploration areas, while the second held the fort. Guests could choose paths and linger at features rather than remain seated through a timed sequence. WDW News Today’s final island tour

Potter’s Mill used windmill blades; Harper’s Mill had a waterwheel. The barrel bridge provided a moving crossing, while caves and the fort’s escape tunnel supplied different kinds of enclosed exploration. Together, those features made the attraction an environment to investigate, not simply scenery viewed from the riverboat.

The fort’s sign read Fort Langhorn in the photographed late version. Disney’s reference spells it Fort Langhorne and identifies its earlier name as Fort Sam Clemens. Those spelling and naming differences should be recorded, not “corrected” by pretending all documents and signs use the same form.

Do not confuse riverboats with ferryboats

The Fowler and Irvine names also appeared on ferryboats carrying visitors between the Transportation and Ticket Center and Magic Kingdom. A 2019 planDisney answer names those ferries alongside General Joe Potter. They belonged to the arrival-transportation system, not the scenic riverboat circuit inside the park. Closure is not the same as completed redevelopment

The July 2025 notices identify the last visitor day and the start of permanent closure. They do not establish that every structure vanished immediately, or settle the ultimate disposition of Liberty Belle. This history therefore does not claim the vessel was destroyed or permanently preserved.

Disney’s updated August 15, 2026 Piston Peak announcement describes construction and future attractions called Cars Ridge Run Rally and Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along. The lost waterfront deserves more than a single nostalgic photograph. Its history contains separate boats, an island designed for self-directed exploration and a landscape connecting several experiences. Keeping those identities intact is the first step toward understanding what changed.
