The Original Magic of Disney Animation: Florida's Working Studio Tour

The original Magic of Disney Animation opened at Disney-MGM Studios on May 1, 1989. It combined an introductory film with a walking tour through a real animation workplace. Its public attraction closed on July 12, 2015—well after Florida’s feature-animation production operation ended. Back to Neverland introduced the process

The introductory film, Back to Neverland, used Robin Williams and Walter Cronkite to explain animation through the transformation of a new Lost Boy. Disney’s reference lists it as a nine-minute film, shown from the attraction’s opening until September 30, 2003. D23’s Back to Neverland entry

The short supplied a bridge between the finished cartoons visitors knew and the work they were about to observe. Its educational purpose was built into a comic performance, rather than presented only as a lecture or a collection of production terms.

Its removal in 2003 marks a change within the attraction. It should not be mistaken for the end of every public animation experience in the building.

A genuine workplace behind the glass

Disney’s Animation Tour reference describes visitors looking through large windows at story personnel, animators, layout artists, background artists, and ink-and-paint technicians. That range of departments is important. Animation was not simply one person drawing a recognizable character; the tour exposed several kinds of work involved in turning a story into finished images.

Florida artists contributed to Disney features and produced shorts including Roller Coaster Rabbit, Trail Mix-Up and Off His Rockers. The studio then undertook Mulan and was primarily responsible for Lilo & Stitch and Brother Bear, according to the same Disney history. Those credits establish a real production role, without requiring the exaggerated claim that every part of every film was made in the guests’ view.

Production ended before the visitor attraction

Disney’s references use different wording and years for the production shutdown. The Magic of Disney Animation entry says animation ceased in 2003; the Animation Tour entry says the Florida studio closed in 2004. This history keeps that distinction visible as a 2003–2004 transition rather than assigning an unsupported exact final working day.

The essential point is not in dispute between those entries: production stopped long before the public attraction’s 2015 closure. Later visitors could still encounter an attraction about animation without touring an active feature-animation studio.

Launch Bay and the return of a familiar name

Star Wars Launch Bay opened in the former attraction in December 2015, offering exhibits and character encounters associated with the film series. Its Florida date should not be confused with the November opening of the separate Disneyland installation. D23’s Launch Bay history

As of this article’s September 8, 2026 review, Disney has announced a different collection of experiences called The Magic of Disney Animation for September 14. The reimagined surrounding courtyard is already described as open, but the announced indoor collection remains a future opening in the inspected notice. Disney’s 2026 announcement

Plans include drawing instruction with an Olaf figure and recorded guidance from artists, character encounters organized around animation departments, and an Alice-inspired play area. Those announced features echo the subject of animation, but the notice does not announce the reopening of Florida’s former film-production studio.

The reused name therefore needs a version label. The 1989 workplace tour, its post-production visitor attraction, Launch Bay and the new 2026 concept belong to successive chapters of Hollywood Studios, not one uninterrupted operation.
