Disney's Polynesian Resort opened with the Magic Kingdom in 1971 with 490 rooms. It was expanded to 855 but then 8 rooms were removed to construct a conceirge lounge onto the end of Hawaii longhouse. Currently there are 847 rooms available.
The resort is themed like Hawaii and the South Pacific. The hotels are shaped like longhouses that are all connected via paths.
The resort also sits on the resort line of the monorail with its own monorail station. The resort is also reachable by the Ticket and Transportation Center via a lighted path. Additionally, guests can take a boat ferry to the Magic Kingdom as well.
Expansion
In 1978, the resort added a new longhouse adding 145 new rooms. In 1985, they added 334 more rooms bringing the total to 855. Later 8 rooms were used for the conceirge lounge bringing the total to the current 847. In 2004, portions of the resort went under renovations with rooms being refurnished. This is expected to be completed by the end of 2007.
