Disney's Mediterranean Resort was to be built in the place of Disney's Venetian Resort. The resort was to be a 5 star resort which the Grand Floridian was unable to achive. It would have been a smaller sized resort and located on the Seven Seas Lagoon between Disney's Contemporary Resort and the Transportation and Ticket Center. The resort was planned in the late 1980s and land was even cleared in the early 1990s. Land surveys showed that the ground was unable to support any buildings and that any foundation would have to be deeper than Spaceship Earth. The resort plan came back in the mid 1990s but was dropped.
The resort was to be themed as a Greek island featuring Spanish style rooms facing the lagoon.
